What is French Dictation?

Dictation is the transcription of spoken text. It is one of the ways to practice and test our listening and writing skills in any language. During the dictation an educator will be slowly reading aloud a short text in French while you write down the words as they are spoken.

Who can join?

All members of the Francophile community are welcome and invited to join us.

What do I need to do on the day?

You'll need the following:

  • Join the Avecmavoix Discord Community. Click here to accept our invite.
  • Wear a headset if possible. This help you hear better and remove unnecessary auditory distractions.
  • Make sure you are logged in to the Avecmavoix Discord and click on the  #dictation-room voice channel under the Dictation Event category.
  • Please try to be in the channel at least 10 minutes before the start time so you have time to get set up.
  • Bring a piece of paper and a pen.

Though you may want to type the dictation using a computer, we highly suggest that you write down the dictation using pen and paper. Typing in French is a great skill.

However for this exercise,  it might be difficult to get the accents right while typing which might distract you during the dictation.

Furthermore, spell check is available on computers and we would like to discourage the use of spell check for this exercise.

How do I check my answers?

If you would like us to correct your work, we will be giving everyone 5 minutes after the dictation to take a photo of their work. The educator will give you instructions on how to submit your work. We will only correct work that has been handwritten.

Once submissions are closed, we will share the text with everyone, so we can all correct our work together. Afterwards, we will have a short Q&A session.

Are you ready to challenge yourself this Saturday?
